Ballet For Fun - Sorrento

–
October 25, 2026

A ballet class designed to bring ballet and all of its joys to people that normally wouldn't be able to access it.
If you've ever thought about going to a ballet class and giving it a try, but have been scared, apprehensive, or known you might not be welcome in the room, this class is for you.

Every 4th Weekend of the month, 3:30 - 4:30 PM
(next: 26/09/2026)
(then: 25/10/2026)
Held at the Sorrento Community Hall
Absolute beginners welcome
Disabled people are also welcome, and will be provided with accommodations as needed

The class is designed to be as inclusive as possible and to avoid common triggers that occur in a standard ballet class. Many people avoid ballet because of the way you are expected to think about and pay attention to your body. So this class will NOT be discussing anything beyond the absolute necessities (eg. for this movement, your hand will reach in front, then move up above your head). Another common reason is that it's so
stechnical; there are a lot of very specific movements and positions to keep track of. And they're all in French! It becomes very overwhelming, very fast, especially for people with cognitive disabilities and/or neurodiversities. So we like to go slow and keep it simple. I always try to give clear instructions, and will repeat them as often as necessary.

The other big barrier a lot of people face is the discrimination and exclusion found in the ballet. Although this class can't make big changes to the greater ballet world, it is very important to me that it feels safe and welcoming towards people of all backgrounds and identities. This specifically includes, but is not limited to, people of colour, indigenous Australians, fat people, disabled people and queer people.

The point of this class, first and foremost, is to bring ballet to people who would never go to a traditional ballet class. It has therefore been specifically designed with certain groups of people in mind. However anyone and everyone is welcome! If you think giving ballet a go might be fun, or if you just want a way to find new people and make some friends, we would love to have you.

  • No dress code, (something you can move in is best)
  • You CAN bring a friend, support person, or support worker; even if they are not participating.
  • It is possible to take this class with severe mobility restrictions (eg. fully seated) but it is best to let us know before the day so we can plan the specifics for your needs (there will be a question when you click on "attend" or if you follow the link at the end).
  • Everyone is expected to be kind and respectful to all people in the room regardless of their appearance, identity, disability, etc.
  • You can arrive up to 30 minutes early (although 5 is fine too)
  • The class is suitable for absolute beginners

More Detailed Information and More Extensive Sign Up Form

The first page of this link has a lot of information about how the class is run, what to expect, and how we ensure inclusivity and accessibility. The page also has a "sign up" button, this has a form that includes your accessibility needs, safety concerns (eg. allergy, epilepsy), anything you're worried about, an "anything else" box, and basics like your name. Many people have found it a helpful place to make sure all of their needs are known. You are, of course, welcome to just click the "attend" button on this page and leave it there.
