Meet new people
Step forward on your journey towards a more connected life

Connection starts with you
Humans are social creatures, and we’ve been hanging out together for aeons! It’s in our DNA to want to belong to a community where we can be ourselves and feel supported, seen, heard and celebrated. So get ready to join the community-building party!
At Befriend, we’re here to help you get your community journey started! But let’s be real, we’re not the stars of the show, that’s you! The real magic happens when awesome people like you make the choice to connect. It all starts with showing up at local events, meeting new people, and being brave enough to start a conversation.
Whether you’re sharing your hobbies and passions, a cuppa on your verandah with a neighbour, or your chooks’ eggs, we’re all about helping you find your people. We believe that everyone’s journey to connection and community is unique, and we’re excited to help you find your own path.
So, what are you waiting for? Let’s dance our way into the kind of communities where everyone feels like they belong!

Hosting a group
Embrace the awkward, lace up your Befriend bonnet and bring people together.
We know what you’re thinking: getting out there feels scary. Don’t worry, every person who has ever reached out to their community with an invitation to connect probably had butterflies too… It’s all part of the human experience! And trust us when we say, there are thousands of people out there just waiting for someone like you to invite them to connect… it often takes just one person to reach out and make the first move!
What’s important to you?
All of the best community projects, groups and initiatives started as an idea – from community gardens to Buy Nothing groups. All of these wonderful initiatives began as something small. Community life can’t happen without people like you offering up ideas to bring people together.
You might be an online gamer, looking for a digital community, or perhaps you’re passionate about conscious living and want to initiate a local clothes exchange. Every single person on the planet has something unique to offer the world. The possibilities are infinite, and at the centre of all of them is you and the things you want to share with others.
Here are just a few ideas to get you thinking about how you might like to cultivate a sense of community for yourself:

Conversation circles
Making the space for deep conversation and reflection with others

Sharing your passion
Work collaboratively with like-minded locals to bring a vintage film screening to your neighbourhood

Initiate diversity dinners
Get to know your neighbours through driveway dinner parties that celebrate and share culture diversity

Create an urban garden
Meet new people and enjoy homegrown produce by starting an urban garden in a shared space

Host a friendly event
Send an open-invitation to connect over your favourite activity

Seek out new experiences
Shared experiences help us connect, so go dancing, participate in a skill swap, initiate a Mexican cooking class – you do you!

Common questions about about all this
How do I join Befriend?
Great news! If you’re engaged with Befriend in any way—maybe you come to a gathering now and then, follow us on Facebook, open our newsletter, or just like what we’re about—then you’re already considered a member of the Befriend community! No forms, no fees, no obligations.
If you’re keen to connect more actively, we recommend creating a free Meetup account so you can RSVP to events and stay in the loop. You’re also welcome to sign up to our newsletter, check out our Facebook group, or reach out if you’d like a hand getting started.
How much does a Befriend event cost?
Most gatherings are totally free to attend—hooray! 🎉 Befriend is all about creating accessible, welcoming spaces, so there are no membership fees, no sign-up costs, and no catches.
Every now and then, a Host might ask for a small donation to cover things like room hire or materials (think: a few dollars in a jar), or you might pay for your own coffee or movie ticket if the group’s meeting at a café or cinema. But generally, connecting through Befriend won’t cost you much—just a bit of your time and curiosity.
How do I find an event?
Events are usually listed in the Befriend Social Network on a website called Meetup. It’s easy to use, free to create a profile and simple to look at all the events taking place across Perth! Whilst there isn’t an easy way to see events geographically, Hosts usually list the location of the event in the title.
You can also check out the map above to browse events by location. Click on the red pins to open up the event details and provide a link to RSVP through our Meetup page, where you can also contact the Host directly if you have any questions.
You can also browse our Upcoming Events page on our website, which has links to a few location specific calendars prepared by those local communities. Or reach out to us and we’ll help you find something that suits you.
How do I know if an event is accessible?
Most Hosts will describe the accessibility of their event or venue in the description on Meetup. You are also welcome to reach out to the Host or to us to ask about a specific event.
Can support workers or carers attend a group too?
Absolutely. Befriend gatherings are designed to be welcoming, relaxed spaces—and that includes folks attending with support workers or carers. You’re welcome to come along together, and participate however feels most comfortable for you both.
There’s no sign-up, no registration process, and no need to ask for permission. Just choose an event that sounds good, RSVP, and show up as you are.
Do you have events for children?
Befriend is mainly for adults aged 18 and over. Some gatherings, such as intergenerational playgroups or picnics, are designed so children can attend alongside their parent or caregiver. In these spaces, adults stay with and are responsible for the children they bring, as our gatherings are focused on shared connection rather than providing care for children.
How many people usually go to a gathering?
Groups are generally small gatherings of between 3-15 people. It varies, depending on the activity and sometimes, how long the group has been running.
For various reason, the event on the Meetup listing may appear to have very few or no attendees, for example, some people may have RSVP’d to the Host in a different way. You can always reach out to the Host or get in touch with us if you want to find out more about an event.
