Connection starts with you

Humans are social creatures, and we’ve been hanging out together for aeons! It’s in our DNA to want to belong to a community where we can be ourselves and feel supported, seen, heard and celebrated. So get ready to join the community-building party!

At Befriend, we’re here to help you get your community journey started! But let’s be real, we’re not the stars of the show, that’s you! The real magic happens when awesome people like you make the choice to connect. It all starts with showing up at local events, meeting new people, and being brave enough to start a conversation.

Whether you’re sharing your hobbies and passions, a cuppa on your verandah with a neighbour, or your chooks’ eggs, we’re all about helping you find your people. We believe that everyone’s journey to connection and community is unique, and we’re excited to help you find your own path.

So, what are you waiting for? Let’s dance our way into the kind of communities where everyone feels like they belong!

Hosting a group

Embrace the awkward, lace up your Befriend bonnet and bring people together.

We know what you’re thinking: getting out there feels scary. Don’t worry, every person who has ever reached out to their community with an invitation to connect probably had butterflies too… It’s all part of the human experience! And trust us when we say, there are thousands of people out there just waiting for someone like you to invite them to connect… it often takes just one person to reach out and make the first move!

What’s important to you?

All of the best community projects, groups and initiatives started as an idea – from community gardens to Buy Nothing groups. All of these wonderful initiatives began as something small. Community life can’t happen without people like you offering up ideas to bring people together.

You might be an online gamer, looking for a digital community, or perhaps you’re passionate about conscious living and want to initiate a local clothes exchange. Every single person on the planet has something unique to offer the world. The possibilities are infinite, and at the centre of all of them is you and the things you want to share with others.

Here are just a few ideas to get you thinking about how you might like to cultivate a sense of community for yourself:

Frequently asked questions

Great news! If you’re engaged with Befriend in any way—maybe you come to a gathering now and then, follow us on Facebook, open our newsletter, or just like what we’re about—then you’re already considered a member of the Befriend community! No forms, no fees, no obligations.

If you’re keen to connect more actively, we recommend creating a free Meetup account so you can RSVP to events and stay in the loop. You’re also welcome to sign up to our newsletter, check out our Facebook group, or reach out if you’d like a hand getting started.

Absolutely. Befriend gatherings are designed to be welcoming, relaxed spaces—and that includes folks attending with support workers or carers. You’re welcome to come along together, and participate however feels most comfortable for you both.

There’s no sign-up, no registration process, and no need to ask for permission. Just choose an event that sounds good, RSVP, and show up as you are.

Befriend is mainly for adults aged 18 and over. Some gatherings, such as intergenerational playgroups or picnics, are designed so children can attend alongside their parent or caregiver. In these spaces, adults stay with and are responsible for the children they bring, as our gatherings are focused on shared connection rather than providing care for children.

At the moment, our community-building efforts are focused on the Perth Metro area. We don’t have the capacity to support Hosts beyond that. But we’re always curious to connect with like-minded folks, so if you’re dreaming about something outside Perth, send us a message—we’d love to hear what’s on your heart and see if there’s something we can co-imagine.
