Natural disasters such as bushfires and heat waves are becoming more frequent and severe. In response, Befriend has been commissioned to support people in Wanneroo and Perth’s northern corridor to reduce risk and strengthen community resilience. Through funding from the National Disaster Risk Reduction grant program, we are focused on fostering resilient communities by nurturing strong local connections, inclusive neighbourhoods, and community-led initiatives. We recognise that resilience exists both at an individual and community level, each reinforcing the other.
Building resilience to natural disasters also strengthens our capacity to navigate broader social challenges like illness, financial hardship, and housing stress. Strong social networks are key to resilience – when people look out for each other, work collaboratively with experts, and engage with local organisations, businesses, and government, communities recover more quickly and experience less loss and suffering.
Stay connected and be part of something bigger. Strong communities are more resilient when people come together, support one another, and share their stories.
