Meet Leisa, one of our Wonderful Sweet Skills Instructors

Friday, February 19, 2016

Leisa fell in love with Befriend when she was working on the eFriends Project two years ago, and since then, has kept up to date with all things Befriend-related.

When the opportunity came up to share her passion and business of using art to connect with the Befriend community, Leisa jumped at it, running a Fused Glass Jewellery course in the 2015 Sweet Skills pilot. “It was so great to see how the group got to know each other over the four weeks of the course – they became more comfortable with each other, and the conversation naturally started to flow. My favourite moment was seeing the pride in the group when they got to see their completed jewellery, and the way they shared what they had made with each other.”

Leisa is excited to be running the Meet and Make Craft course, which starts in April. Leisa will be showing you how to make mosaicked pots, homemade candles, rag rugs and dream catchers. Sign up here

Befriend's Success at the Funding Network

Monday, December 21, 2015

Befriend was selected as one of four finalists for the Perth Funding Network event held on the 25th of November 2015. Nick presented a 6-minute pitch to the audience of individuals, foundations and corporations with the aim of raising $10,000 – see his pitch here. Supporters in the audience included Befriend members Simone Diston and Tom Linden-Wood, along with Kathleen Burton, Claire Stokes and Lisa Dobrin.

The Starter Kit is a project that the Befriend Team has been working on, to provide mentoring services the enable more individuals to attend Befriend events and make social connections. The pitch that Nick presented was successful in driving members of the audience to pledge $11,500 towards the project, which will allow the Starter Kit to work with over 75 individuals to bring them into the Befriend community.

Sunday Summer Vibes at the Befriend Summer Sessions

Monday, December 21, 2015

We're kick-starting the year with a series of free events so you can get the most out of summer! Befriend Summer Sessions are casual social gatherings on Sunday afternoons at various parks around Perth. There'll be a local musician playing an acoustic set for your entertainment, and a couple of our volunteers cooking up a BBQ, so you can snack on a hotdog for a gold coin donation. Summer Sessions are a great way to get out and about on a Sunday afternoon, meet some new people, and get your year off to a sunny start! Whether you've been coming to Befriend events for years, or you're still yet to dive in, these events are perfect for everyone. Bring a friend or two, or the whole family! Look out for the Befriend flag!

Summer Sessions run January - March 2016, supported by the City of Subiaco, City of Joondalup and City of Fremantle. Check out the Events List or Facebook page for full details of all events in the series.

Introducing the Hills Social Group - connecting people living in the Perth Hills

Monday, December 21, 2015

Looking for more opportunities to meet others living in the Perth Hills? We'd like to introduce you to the Hills Social Group! Started by Fleur Adams in early 2015, the Hills Social Group exists to encourage friendships between people in the Perth Hills (ie. living in the Darling Range) through various social events and get-togethers. Fleur started the group after seeing residents come together to help each other in the aftermath of last summer's bushfires. Once the recovery effort came to a close, Fleur saw that people were seeking a way to keep connecting with other Hills residents, to keep alive the sense of connection and community. This year, they have hosted events including a twilight walk of the Swan View Tunnel, picnics at Mundaring Weir and Noble Falls, and a bonfire night!

Befriend members living in the Hills are very welcome to attend events of the Hills Social Group. We will be featuring their events in our monthly newsletter, to work together to connect more people everywhere in Perth. To join the Hills Social Group and view their upcoming events, search "Hills Social Events and Get Togethers" on Facebook. Membership is only open to those living in the Perth Hills (Darling Ranges).

Next Hills Social Group Event: Champagne Breakfast @ Lake Leschenaultia, Sat Jan 16th, 9am. RSVP directly to "Hills Social Events and Get Togethers" via Facebook.
