My aim is to raise awareness about mental illnesses, and the importance of caring for your mental health. Mental health care can be expensive, draining, and daunting. So I hope to remove those issues, along with the stigma of having a mental illness, and provide help for anyone, regardless of an illness or not. I want to provide this in a social and warm setting so that we can all make friends, and improve ourselves along the way. This is not a counselling session, but an opportunity to learn about how to support your own mental health and wellbeing. Come to one or all sessions, up to you!

WHY: To have a BBQ and be an extra for some filming we're doing!

Tash Tunney is a radio/tv broadcasting student at WAAPA. Tash is producing a 2.5-4min lifestyle/current affairs documentary about Befriend that could possibly be aired on Channel 7 later this year - woohoo! We're really excited to have the opportunity to share how Befriend can impact people's lives and we hope that the documentary will introduce more people to the Social Network.

Tash and the camera crew will stage a film shoot on Tuesday 24 October at the regular Subi Sizzle location. Tash will be filmed talking about Befriend, and would love to have a few folks come along as Extras for the shoot, to form the background footage cooking a BBQ and playing a game of boccee/finska etc... So we'll be hosting a BBQ lunch and we'd love to see your friendly faces! It'll be a nice opportunity to catch up, just with a film crew in the background! You'll also get the chance to meet members of the Befriend staff and many of our excellent volunteers! We'd love you to come along if you can make it.

    Session 4: Knowing yourself

“You attract the right things when you have a sense of who you are.”

    – Amy Poehler

Friendship is one of the most complex things we do as human beings, and yet it’s not something we’re taught at school. Befriend are running a series of events to explore the art and science of friendship so that you can learn how to make new friends or deepen your existing relationships.

If you’ve ever pondered the following questions, then this series is for you!

Why do we become friends with some people and not others? Why do we sometimes lose touch with our best school or university friends? How can we become friends with people outside of work/uni/tafe/church/footy team/choir etc?Why do we struggle to make new friends in a new city? Why do we struggle to make friends, full stop?

In Session Four of the series, you’ll really get to know yourself. We’ll show you an activity that will help you to map out the things that are important to you and that make you who you are. You’ll learn techniques for exploring your values, passions and interests and discover how to use these qualities to connect with others. It is not necessary to have the other sessions in this series before attending Session Four.

What to expect: At the session, you can expect to meet people who, like you, want to learn about friendship and make new friends. You’ll take away some tips and tricks that you can incorporate into your life to help you make new friends or deepen your existing relationships and who knows, this might just be the place where a new friendship starts!
